Writer’s Block: Gadget Conundrum

Writer’s Block from May 27, 2010:

You’re going on your dream vacation and you can only take one gadget with you. Camera, music player, cell phone, laptop or something else — what do you bring and why? Which other ones would you miss most?

Does anyone really have to ask which one would go with me? Of course it would be the camera. I’ve been known to go on trips for the explicit purpose of taking pictures…

I’d have to take some extra memory cards, though, since on a longer vacation I tend to take more pictures than I have memory. So the item I’d miss most would be the laptop. I wouldn’t be able to clean out the memory cards each night. The cell phone would admittedly be second on the list since I’ve gotten so used to having it whenever I want it.

I really wouldn’t miss my mp3 player or my Kindle. They’re nice to have around, nice enough that I’d take them if I could. But I wouldn’t particularly miss them if I had to go without them.

I know it’s unusual for someone who works for a technology company, but those five items are the only gadgets I have (and my phone is not a smart phone). I don’t really feel the need for some of the other things that are out there, so I’ve not spent money to buy them in the first place.
