After the eagle landed, I decided to do another filet crochet adaptation. I’m now working on a dolphin, which was also designed by Sandi Marshall. It, too, is on one of the 6×6″ remnant pieces of 14-ct aida that I buy from time to time. I worked the eagle in a single color but I’m doing this project in three colors as an experiment in tweeding, or mixing colors in the needle.

The dolphin will be gray and light blue (DMC 414/931) and the ocean will be dark and light blue (DMC 3750/931). This isn’t so much an experiment in color-mixing as it is an experiment to see how using two different shades looks different than using a single, blended shade. I’m also wondering whether using the same light blue color in both areas will add some sort of visual “unification.”

As of today, the dolphin is pretty close to finished; only half of the tail remains and I’ll have that done by the end of the evening. It’s visually coming out as a sort of steel blue, but it does appear to be slightly different colors from slightly different angles. It will be interesting to see how it compares – or contrasts – with the ocean.

Pattern is here: crochet.about.com/library/ndolphin.htm
